Scripture Study - Doctrine & Covenants - Section 3 Part 1

Scripture Study
Doctrine and Covenants
Section 3 – Part 1

Historical Background:
  1. September 22-December 1827 – During these months Joseph Smith obtained the Book of Mormon plates and the Urim and Thummin from the Angel Moroni. Conspiring people who had heard about the “gold plates” sought to steal them from the Prophet. Joseph and Emma moved to Harmony, Pennsylvania, in order to work on the translation in peace.
  2. December 1827-February 1828 – As time passed, Martin Harris visited Joseph Smith in Harmony. Joseph had written some of the characters from the plates and their translation on a piece of paper. Martin Harris took them to a Professor Charles Anthon at Columbia College in New York. At first the professor certified that the characters and translation were correct, but when he heard that they had come from gold plates that were delivered by an angel, he tore up the certificate. (compare Joseph Smith – History 1:64-65 to Isaiah 29:11-14)
  3. April 12-June 14, 1828 – During this time, Joseph and Martin made considerable progress in translating the plates. Martin felt the need to show his wife the translated pages so she would be satisfied that he was involved in an inspired work. Three times Martin asked Joseph in inquire of the Lord. The answer to the first two request was no. But after Martin pleaded with Joseph to ask a third time, the Lord said yes. However, Martin was given strict instructions concerning to whom he could show them (See The Papers of Joseph Smith 1:10) Martin made a covenant to keep these instructions, took 116 pages of the manuscript, and went to Palmyra. Martin did not keep his solemn promise, and the 116 pages were lost.
  4. July 1828 – Shortly after Martin left for Palmyra with the manuscript, Emma gave birth to a baby boy, who lived only a few hours. Emma's life was threatened by complications associated with the birth. Joseph spent all his efforts nursing her back to health. Once he believed emma would be all right, he began to worry about the status of the manuscript. Consequently, he made the 100-mile journey to Palmyra to seek out Martin. After learning of the loss of the 116 pages, Joseph returned to Harmony, where he received the chastisement , counsel, and comfort found in the revelation recorded in Doctrine and Covenants 3. Moroni then left with both the Urim and Thummim and the plates. (See Lucy Mack Smith, History of Joseph Smith, 135.)

Scripture Study - Doctrine & Covenants - Section 2

Doctrine & Covenants
Section 2

Ann Temperance George and her husband, John Doney, sailed from England to America on April 19, 1856, on the Samuel Curling with their toddler, Ann. Little Ann became sick at sea. Her parents prayed that her life could be spared until they reached land. Their prayers were answered, and they buried their little daughter in Toledo, Ohio. (“Life Sketch of Ann Temperance and John Doney,” in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Museum archives, Salt Lake City, Utah.)

We now know how to help these pioneers and others like them to become an eternal families...Temple Work. We all have ancestors that need this blessing and we are instructed to do so. Elder John A Widtsoe had this to say about Section 2 of the Doctrine and Covenants, “The beginning and the end of the gospel is written in section two of the Doctrine and Covenants. It is the keystone of the wonderful gospel arch; and if that center stone should weaken and fall out, the whole gospel structure would topple down in unorganized doctrinal blocks.’” (ElRay L. Christiansen, in Conference Report, Apr. 1960, p. 48.)

The message of Malachi is so important that it has been repeated in each of the standard works:
Bible: Malachi 4:5-6
Book of Mormon: 3Nephi 25:5-6
Doctrine and Covenants: Section 2, 27:9, 128:17
Pearl of Great Price: Joseph Smith – History 1:37-39

What it must have been like for Joseph Smith to be visited by Moroni and given instructions. That night was noted in Joseph Smith – History 1:30-32:

  • 30 While I was thus in the act of calling upon God, I discovered a light appearing in my room, which continued to increase until the room was lighter than at noonday, when immediately a personage appeared at my bedside, standing in the air, for his feet did not touch the floor.
  • 31 He had on a loose robe of most exquisite whiteness. It was a whiteness beyond anything earthly I had ever seen; nor do I believe that any earthly thing could be made to appear so exceedingly white and brilliant. His hands were naked, and his arms also, a little above the wrist; so, also, were his feet naked, as were his legs, a little above the ankles. His head and neck were also bare. I could discover that he had no other clothing on but this robe, as it was open, so that I could see into his bosom.
  • 32 Not only was his robe exceedingly white, but his whole person was glorious beyond description, and his countenance truly like lightning. The room was exceedingly light, but not so very bright as immediately around his person. When I first looked upon him, I was afraid; but the fear soon left me.

Joseph Smith would have to wait many years for that night to show fruit. On April 3, 1836, in the Kirtland temple, Elijah returned to restore the sealing power to Earth. But why Elijah? This was expressed by Joseph Fielding Smith: “The keys that Elijah held were the keys of the everlasting priesthood, the keys of the sealing power, which the Lord gave unto him. And that is what he . . . gave to the Prophet Joseph Smith; and that included a ministry of sealing for the living as well as the dead—and it is not confined to the living and it is not confined to the dead, but includes them both. . . .
“Elijah’s mission was the sealing power. He held the keys by which the parents could be sealed together and children sealed to parents. He bestowed these keys upon the Prophet Joseph Smith. And that applies to the dead as well as the living since the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
“Elijah was the last prophet that held the keys of the priesthood, and who will, before the last dispensation, restore the authority and deliver the keys of the priesthood, in order that all the ordinances may be attended to in righteousness. It is true the Savior had authority and power to bestow this blessing; but the sons of Levi were too prejudiced. . . . Why send Elijah? Because he holds the keys of the authority to administer in all the ordinances of the priesthood; and without the authority is given, the ordinances could not be administered in righteousness.
“But what was the nature of his mission to the earth in these latter days? It was to restore power and authority which once was given to men on the earth and which is essential to the complete salvation and exaltation of man in the kingdom of God. In other words, Elijah came to restore to the earth, by conferring on mortal prophets duly commissioned of the Lord, the fulness of the power of priesthood. This priesthood holds the keys of binding and sealing on earth and in heaven of all the ordinances and principles pertaining to the salvation of man, that they may thus become valid in the celestial kingdom of God.” ( Doctrines of Salvation, 2:111–12, 113-14, 117.)

Who are the fathers and children referred to by Malachi and in Verse 2? “The fathers are our dead ancestors who died without the privilege of receiving the gospel, but who received the promise that the time would come when that privilege would be granted them. The children are those now living who are preparing genealogical data and who are performing the vicarious ordinances in the temples.
“The turning of the hearts of the children to the fathers is placing or planting in the hearts of the children that feeling and desire which will inspire them to search out the records of the dead. Moreover the planting of the desire and inspiration in their hearts is necessary. This they must have in order that they might go into the house of the Lord and perform the necessary labor for their fathers, who died without a knowledge of the gospel, or without the privilege of receiving the fulness of the gospel.” (Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 2:127–28.)

What about the curse of an utterly wasted earth if it were not so? Ratification in heaven is given to all ordinances of the gospel through the sealing powers of the priesthood. This sealing power makes possible the welding together of fathers and children, a work essential for exaltation to the living and the dead (see D&C 128:18 ). The curse spoken of by Malachi is clarified by Moroni, who explained that “the whole earth would be utterly wasted” at the Lord’s coming if the sealing powers were not restored. President Joseph Fielding Smith explained why: “The sealing power of Elijah makes it possible for this joining of the families, generation to generation, back to the beginning. Now, if these units of authority were not here, then the work of sealing, by which the family units are preserved, could not be performed; then the binding power by which all blessings are sealed in heaven, as well as on earth, would be lacking. If this were so, the earth would be smitten with a curse, for all work which had been done, without these binding or sealing ordinances, would fall to the ground unfulfilled.” ( Doctrines of Salvation, 2:121–22.)

Scripture Study Doctrine & Covenants Section 1 - Part 3

Doctrine and Covenants
Section 1 – Part 3

With whom is the Lord well pleased?

Let's take a look at verses 29-33:

  1. Joseph Smith was able to translate the Book of Mormon by the power of God – Using the Urim and Thumim Joseph Smith translated the record of the Nephites. Verse 29
  2. Those given the commandments were also given the power to lay the foundation of this church and bring forth out of obscurity and darkness the only true church upon the face of the whole earth and I, the Lord, am well pleased speaking unto the church collectively. Verse 30
  3. The Lord cannot look upon sin with the least degree of allowance and therefore is not pleased with every member of the church. Verse 31-32
  4. Those who are unrepentant shall lose the spirit and the light that they have already received because the Lord's Spirit shall not always strive with man. Verse 33

The Lord tells us all that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the one true church, established by Him through Joseph Smith Jr. He wants us to know that although He loves us all, He is not always pleased with us, especially when we are unrepentant. Now is the time for us to act. Think of the following:
  • What kinds of things do Church members do that keep the Lord from being “pleased” with them?
  • What can our families do to help the Lord be “well pleased” with His Church?

Verses 34-39 cover prophecies that shall be fulfilled. Verse 35 says, “the hour is not yet, but is nigh at hand, when peace shall be taken from the earth, and the devil shall have power over his own dominion.” President Harold B. Lee wrote, “That was given 140 years ago. Is there anyone here that doubts but what this is the day that the Lord was referring to, when the devil has power over his own dominion? Everywhere it seems as though a wave of wickedness is about to engulf an unrepentant world.” (The Teachings of Harold B. Lee, 10; italics added.)
Further, George Albert Smith said, “What a pitiable thing it would be if that ended there, for we can see the power of the adversary in the world and the destruction that is being wrought by those who are his emissaries;” after the Lord promises in Verse 36 that He “shall have power over his saints, and shall reign in their midst, ans shall come down in judgement upon...the world.” George Albert Smith goes on further to say, “What a promise, but it is all conditioned upon our righteousness, not on anything else, not upon our wealth, nor our strength in numbers, not upon our isolation from the world, but upon our righteousness.” (Conference Report, April 1943, 92.)

President Smith says our righteousness is what is needed to receive the promised blessing. Verse 37 says, “Search these commandments, for they are true and faithful and the prophecies and promises which are in them shall all be fulfilled.” We must search the scriptures, not just read, but study. If we do this search and study in righteousness, we are promised that the blessings will come forth for us.

Scripture Study Doctrine & Covenants Section 1 - Part 2

Scripture Study
Doctrine and Covenants
Section 1 – Part 2

Let's look at verses 20-28 and see why the Lord is giving Joseph Smith commandments and revelations.

Verse 20: That every man might speak in the name of the Lord.
Verse 21: That faith might increase.
Verse 22: That mine everlasting covenant might be established.
Verse 23: That the fulness of my gospel might be proclaimed.
Verse 24: That my servants might come to understanding.
Verse 25: And inasmuch as they erred it might be made known.
Verse 26: And inasmuch as they sought wisdom they might be instructed.
Verse 27: And inasmuch as they sinned they might be chastened, that they might repent.
Verse 28: And inasmuch as they were humble they might be made strong, and blessed from on high, and receive knowledge from time to time.

These were given to Joseph Smith, but what if we were to personalize it? Instead of “every man” what if we replaced it with “me” or “I”. How would that sound then?

Verse 20: That “I” might speak in the name of the Lord.
Verse 21: That “my” faith might increase.
Verse 24: That “I” might come to understanding.
Verse 25: And inasmuch as “I” erred it might be known.
Verse 26: And inasmuch as “I” sought wisdom “I” might be instructed.
Verse 27: And inasmuch as “I” sinned “I” might be chastened, that “I” might repent.
Verse 28: And inasmuch as “I” was humble “I” might be made strong, and blessed from on high, and receive knowledge from time to time.

How important was it for us to know these things? These verses alone show the love that Jesus has for us, allowing us to be instructed, or made strong and blessed. We only have to read to understand that.

Scripture Study Doctrine and Covenants Section 1 - Part 1

Scripture Study
Doctrine and Covenants
Section 1 – Part 1

Section 1 of the Doctrine and Covenants was given as a revelation from the Lord through the Prophet Joseph Smith during a conference of the elders of the Church in Hiram, Ohio on November 1, 1831. Joseph Smith had received many revelations before this time and chronologically it occurred between Section 66 and Section 67. During this conference, it was discussed that the revelations should be compiled into book form. This section thus constitutes the Lord's preface to the doctrines, covenants and commandments given in this dispensation. In the November 1989 Ensign, President Spencer W. Kimball wrote that “The Doctrine and Covenants is the only book in the world that has a preface written by the Lord Himself.”

The first word of Section 1 is “Hearken”. According to the dictionary, harken is defined as “to give heed or attention to what is said; to listen.” At this point it is the Lord, as noted in verse 2, that is telling all men to listen. That all men should see and all men should hear. It is a warning to all people delivered by the voices of his chosen disciples during these last days. He has given us prophets that deliver not only the Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants, but also General Conference twice a year and Church Magazines (Ensign, Liahona, New Era and Friend) to guide us through our lives.

In verses 5-7 of Section 1, the Lord tells us that he is sending forth these chosen ones and none shall be delayed. They will carry his authority and declares that His decree that they bring forth (the Doctrine and Covenants) shall be fulfilled. What an unearthly responsibility the Prophet must feel while leading the Church. The Prophet Joseph Smith said, “It is an awful responsibility to write in the name of the Lord.” (History of the Church, 1:226).

“Soon after President Spencer W Kimball had moved into the office of President of the Church, Elder Boyd K. Packer went to him to get his approval for an article he had been asked to write. He found President Kimball seated at his desk weeping. Concerned, he asked, “President Kimball, what is the matter?” 'I am such a little man for such a big responsibility!' was the quiet response.” (Lucile C. Tate, Boyd K. Packer: A Watchman on the Tower, 187.)

The Lord explains to us in verses 14-16 the need for his chosen disciples. We are to prepare for the time when “the arm of the Lord will be revealed.” People will not hear His voice, nor the voice of His servants, nor the words of His prophets and apostles because they have strayed from the ordinances and broken His covenants. They have not sought the Lord because “every man walketh in his own way” and can decide his own path. But the Lord, knowing that which will happen in the future, sent Joseph Smith, Jr and successive prophets to speak in these latter days and give us further commandments and that they should proclaim these to the world.
